The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has commenced the clearing of drainage channels across Plateau State as part of proactive measures to prevent flooding ahead of the rainy season.

The initiative is aimed at removing waste materials and accumulated debris blocking waterways in key locations across the state.

In a statement released to THE NIGERIA STANDARD by Information Officer, Godwin Moses, the agency disclosed that the operation was designed to ensure the free flow of water through drainage systems and reduce environmental hazards associated with flooding.

It stated that work had already begun in several parts of Jos metropolis, including the Old Bukuru Park axis and Bauchi Road, where sanitation teams were seen clearing blocked drainages and evacuating refuse.

The statement added that the Director-General of PEPSA, Samuel Dapiya, said the initiative reflected the government’s commitment to environmental sanitation and public safety.

He noted that blocked drainage systems remained one of the major causes of urban flooding, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.

“Proactive measures, such as the routine clearing of drainages, will significantly reduce the risk of flood-related damage to homes, roads, and businesses,” he stated.

Dapiya also called on residents, shop owners and community leaders to support government efforts by maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings.

He urged the public to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels, warning that such practices undermined sanitation efforts across the state.

“Residents must take responsibility by clearing drainages around their homes and ensuring proper waste disposal,” he added.

He further stressed that collective action was necessary to sustain a clean environment and prevent avoidable disasters during the rainy season.

Some residents of Jos metropolis commended the initiative, describing it as timely as the rains set in.
