The Vice-Chancellor, VC, of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Professor Salisu Usman, has assured students of the institution of his administration’s commitment to improving their welfare and infrastructural development.
Prof. Usman gave the assurance during an interactive meeting with executives of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) and Hostel Governors led by the SUG President, Ridwan Abubakar, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
The VC commended the student leadership at both the SUG and hostel levels for their maturity, conduct and perseverance.He noted that his previous experiences as Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, and as Dean of Student Affairs at the former Kogi State University, Anyigba, had equipped him with a deep understanding of student-related challenges.Prof.
Usman disclosed that although the university had about 13 boreholes, only one was functional when he assumed office.According to him, proactive measures had since been introduced to address the water supply challenge, including the drilling of a new borehole to meet students’ immediate needs, the rehabilitation of five non-functional boreholes and the repair of water tankers to ensure regular water supply.
“My responsibility is to identify and address issues,” he said, while urging students to always channel their concerns through the appropriate communication channels for prompt attention.
The VC also reassured students of ongoing plans for the comprehensive renovation of hostels to improve living conditions within the institution.He urged students to make prudent use of available facilities and reiterated the management’s policy of non-interference in the internal administration of student bodies.
Prof. Usman appealed for unity and cooperation among students and encouraged them to support the efforts of the university management and the Kogi State Government towards providing sustainable solutions to challenges on campus.
He further advised students to remain security conscious and avoid social vices and criminal activities.The VC also reiterated management’s ban on final-year celebrations within the university community, stressing the need to maintain order and discipline.He announced that hostel governors would no longer pay for accommodation and directed that refunds be made to those currently serving.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the SUG President appreciated the VC for granting them audience and providing an opportunity for interaction.He explained that the meeting was aimed at drawing the attention of the VC to key challenges affecting hostel students, particularly issues relating to toilet blockage and sanitation.
He specifically highlighted the recurring problem of blocked water closets and suggested the provision of designated waste disposal pits to address the challenge.
