Discipline, dedication and hard work have defined the journey of GBS Bukuru from a Jos-based grassroots football academy to a programme producing players for Europe.
This was according to Coach Richard Emmanuel, who spoke to THE NIGERIA STANDARD about the team’s growth over three decades of operation.
The academy, based in Bukuru, Plateau State, started as a local initiative to give young players in Jos a structured football environment.
Thirty years later, that same setup has become a recognised pathway for players moving into academies and clubs outside Nigeria.
Coach Emmanuel credited much of the progress to the vision and consistency of the academy’s proprietor, Chief Ahmed Ibrahim, popularly known as Coach Bros of Bukuru, noting that his commitment to high standards has sustained the programme across generations.
In the early years, GBS Bukuru focused on the basics: regular training, competitive matches in Jos and a strict code of conduct for players.
That emphasis on discipline became the academy’s identity and set it apart from other grassroots setups in the region.
As the academy’s reputation grew, scouts and agents began paying attention.
The first wave of players moving abroad opened doors for those who followed.
Emmanuel explained that the academy did not chase quick results but prioritised long-term player development.
The transition from local competitions in Jos to exposure in Europe, he said, came through consistency, strong networks and ensuring players were mentally and technically prepared for higher levels.
He also noted that training discipline remains unchanged, with sessions starting on time and players held accountable for behaviour while education is encouraged alongside football.
According to him, this structure has helped GBS Bukuru players adapt successfully to European environments.
For over 30 years, the academy has produced players who have gone on to feature in youth and senior setups across Europe, making it one of Plateau State’s most consistent grassroots talent pipelines.
Emmanuel said the model proves that geography is not a limitation if structure and discipline are prioritised.
Looking ahead, GBS Bukuru aims to sustain its development pipeline under the continued leadership of Coach Bros of Bukuru, with a focus on ensuring future generations of Jos-based players also gain international opportunities through football.
