From JOHN FWAH, Kaduna
THE Kaduna State Government has announced plans to review teachers’ salaries upward as part of efforts to boost performance and productivity in public schools.
It also dismissed media reports claiming that the state had reinstated the five-day school week, clarifying that the matter was under review.
The Commissioner for Education, Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, made this known when he received leaders of the Kaduna Government College Old Boys Association.
He pointed out that media reports suggesting otherwise had misquoted him and urged the public to disregard them.
Sambo warned journalists to verify information before publication to avoid misleading the public.
He also explained that the occupation of Kaduna Government College by the Civil Defence Corps and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was only a temporary security measure.
He, however, emphasised that both agencies must vacate the school’s premises to enable normal academic activities to resume.
Earlier, the president of the Kaduna Government College Old Boys Association, Alhaji Muhammad Yusuf Sa’in Lere, appealed to Governor Uba Sani to intervene, lamenting that NYSC and Civil Defence officials currently occupy about 70 per cent of the school.
Reiterating the government’s position, Professor Sambo maintained that the reintroduction of the five-day school system had not been approved, noting that it was still only a proposal under consultation with stakeholders.
