From DORCAS PANKYES, Abuja

The Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria, DECAN, has elected a new executive committee to steer its affairs for the next two years following a peaceful and transparent election.

Sunday Odita emerged Chairman, while Linus Aleke was elected Vice Chairman.

Other elected officials include Musa Umar Bologi as Secretary; Benjamin Samson, Treasurer; Martha Ebere, Assistant Secretary; Kikelomo Okere, Financial Secretary; Ihotu Odoh, Welfare Officer; Agbor Jame, Provost; and Mathew Abi, Public Relations Officer.

In his remarks after the election, the new chairman, Odita, said members’ welfare would remain a top priority, describing it as central to sustaining effective defence journalism.

He said the new executive would strengthen collaboration with stakeholders across the defence and security sector in support of national security, peace and development.

Odita added that the association would mobilise key actors within the defence, security and intelligence community to build stronger partnerships aimed at improving security and supporting a stable environment for economic growth.

“The media, defence institutions and other strategic actors must continue to work together in promoting accurate reporting, public trust and informed discourse on security matters,” he said.

He also commended the courage and sacrifices of Nigerian troops engaged in security operations across the country.

Odita paid tribute to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; and other senior commanders, describing their efforts as significant to ongoing operations.

He reaffirmed DECAN’s commitment to strengthening its role as a bridge between the military, security institutions and the public, while supporting initiatives aimed at peace and national development.
