By BEN AUTA, Kaduna

The Kaduna Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) State Level Support Working Group (SLWG) has commended Governor Uba Sani for granting clemency to 97 inmates across correctional facilities in the state.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Dr Terngu Gwar, the group said the decision reflects the objectives of the ACJL, particularly on humane justice delivery and reduction of congestion in custodial centres.

It described the governor’s action as “a compassionate and commendable step” aligned with ongoing reforms in the criminal justice system.

“This compassionate and commendable action reflects the spirit and objectives of the Kaduna Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which seeks to promote fairness, decongest custodial centres, safeguard human dignity, and ensure that justice is administered efficiently and humanely,” the group said.

The working group said the development also reflected outcomes of sustained advocacy on the implementation of the ACJL in the state.

It added that it has continued to engage relevant institutions on prison decongestion, protection of suspects’ rights, speedy trial processes and the use of non-custodial measures where appropriate.

While commending the governor, the group called on the Chief Judge of Kaduna State to strengthen compliance with the ACJL through regular jail delivery exercises and review of cases involving awaiting trial inmates.

It urged the judiciary to improve case management and adopt measures that reduce delays in criminal proceedings.

According to the group, a significant number of inmates remain in custody awaiting trial and require timely judicial attention in line with the provisions of the law.

The SLWG reiterated its commitment to working with all justice sector stakeholders, including the judiciary, executive, correctional service and civil society organisations, to strengthen a more efficient and humane justice system in the state.
