As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, the Nasarawa State Police Command has warned youth against thuggery, violence and other forms of criminality.
The Command urged youth to resist attempts by politicians or other individuals to use them as instruments of mayhem in pursuit of personal or political interests.
The warning was contained in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, and made available to journalists in Lafia.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Shettima Mohammed, acknowledged the vital role of youths in the political process and urged them to reject manipulation into acts of violence, intimidation, destruction of property, assault or attacks on political opponents.
He also called on parents and guardians to counsel their children and wards against actions capable of undermining peace and security.
The Command urged religious leaders to intensify sermons on peaceful coexistence, tolerance, respect for divergent political views and the resolution of disputes through lawful means.
It also called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to notify the Police Command of rallies, meetings and other organised political activities in good time to enable adequate security arrangements.
The commissioner stressed that notifying the police was necessary for effective security planning and should not be seen as a hindrance to legitimate political activities.
He said the Command remained committed to providing a secure environment for citizens to exercise their democratic rights.
The commissioner warned that anyone caught causing mayhem, attacking members of the public, destroying property or threatening or intimidating others under the guise of political loyalty would be arrested and prosecuted.
“The Nasarawa State Police Command will not fold its arms and watch youths being mobilised or manipulated to cause trouble, disrupt public peace or endanger the lives and property of law-abiding citizens,” the statement said.
“The command will decisively deal with any act capable of threatening the peace and security of the state,” it added.
The commissioner urged political actors and their supporters to pursue their aspirations through lawful and democratic means, respect opposing views and discourage their followers from engaging in violence.
