The Taraba State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the death of police officer Ejeh John during an arrest operation in Jalingo, the state capital.
John reportedly sustained injuries during the operation and later died while receiving medical attention.
Police spokesman, ASP Victor Msheliza, confirmed the arrest and said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death was ongoing.
“The Taraba State Police Command has taken note of concerns and public appeals regarding the death of Police Officer Ejeh John, a personnel of the Command, who reportedly sustained injuries during an arrest operation and subsequently died while receiving medical attention,” Msheliza said.
He said Commissioner of Police, CP Edwin Ogboghagha, had directed that the case be handled in accordance with the law.
“The Command will ensure that the investigation is conducted professionally, objectively and transparently, with due process strictly followed,” he said.
Msheliza assured the officer’s family, colleagues and members of the public that the incident would be investigated and not ignored.
He added that anyone found criminally responsible would face the law.
“Where the investigation establishes criminal responsibility, the law will take its course,” Msheliza said.
