Pop-corn, a popular snack made from a special type of corn, has always held a special place in the hearts of both young and old around the world. In Nigeria, it is commonly sold by the roadside, providing a source of livelihood for many. Loved by both the rich and the poor, pop-corn is affordable, delicious and a staple at children’s birthday parties and cinemas. Beyond being a favourite snack, it is also one of the easiest and cheapest businesses to start. In this interview, CHRISTY ZI & LOIS DADUUT spoke with Mohammed Mustapha, a flourishing pop-corn maker and vendor in the heart of Jos, about his journey, challenges and advice for aspiring entrepreneurs
How long have you been in this business?
I have been in this business for over fifteen years. I started in Maiduguri, Borno State, before moving to Kano, then Kaduna State, and finally settling in Plateau State. My stall was originally at Plateau Riders, but because of renovations, we had to move to Indomie Plaza.
What motivated you to go into pop-corn business
From my childhood, I hated idleness and laziness. That passion has always been my driving force in business. I did my investigation and somehow saw that pop-corn business is a lucrative business and that there are never enough hands in the trade.
Another advantage is that it is easy to learn and does not require much capital to start. I believe that no matter how little you start a business, it is better than staying idle. Even when you may not be making tangible profit immediately, you still earn respect and dignity. That is one of the reasons I am dedicated to this business. No matter how little profit I make, I give thanks to Allah.
Are you saying there is no profit in pop-corn business?
Of course not. There is a lot of profit in this business. It is from this business that I cater for my family, pay my children’s school fees and even pay my house rent. Pop-corn business is very lucrative. I used to have forty workers, and it is from this business that I take care of them and pay them. Unfortunately, after we moved from Plateau Riders to this location, business has not been as good as before. But, thank Allah, we are still able to pay our bills and even assist others.
What are some of the challenges you face?
Honestly, the major challenge is capital — both to expand the business and to pay the workers. I pay them on a daily basis. With the way the economy is now, sales are not like before. We used to pop four bags a day, but now we pop only half a bag. The fluctuating prices of ingredients also affect us.
What is your appeal to government and well-meaning Nigerians?
My appeal to government is to help us with financial assistance so that we can boost our business and also provide an affordable place where we can operate. As the business grows, we will also be able to help the youths who work with us.
What advice do you have for the youth?
The advice I give them is that they should not be idle. They should start a business, no matter how small. It does not matter whether they are educated or not. This will help them earn respect in society and take care of themselves. Put pride aside. Whatever business you want to do, start it. It is better than begging, stealing, or being a nuisance in society.
Why did you choose pop-corn business?
I chose this business because producing something by yourself gives dignity and earns respect in society. Of course, it is also profitable.
What are you plans for the future?
I wish the business will grow stronger and bigger by the grace of Allah. I hope to see myself in a more conducive location with more staff as the business expands.
