PLSG cracks down on illegal minersThe Plateau State Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development, Peter Kanang Gwom, has expressed concern over the growing destruction of land caused by illegal mining activities across the state.
The commissioner made this known during a joint enforcement operation carried out with officials of the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development aimed at curbing illegal mining in Plateau State.
Hon. Gwom, who was represented by the Director of Exploration and Gemological Services in the ministry, Mr. Samuel Jaryum said that despite efforts by the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to protect the lives and livelihoods of residents, illegal mining activities have continued unabated.
He noted that the ministry is particularly worried about the increasing number of deaths linked to illegal mining operations, as well as the rising number of out-of-school children in areas within the state capital where such activities are prevalent.
The enforcement team visited several locations, including Zawan, Rayfield Resort, Lamingo Dam and Yingi Reserve during the operation.Items recovered from the illegal miners included generator pumping machines, pickaxes, and other mining equipment.
The team also condemned the practice of mining within residential premises and around Lamingo Dam, describing it as dangerous and environmentally harmful. Residents were, therefore, urged to desist from such activities.
The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development called on members of the public interested in mining to properly register with the ministry, obtain the necessary licences and operate in line with global best practices.
