Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering women and addressing societal exclusionary practices.
The First Lady of Plateau State, Helen Mutfwang, also underscored the importance of equality as a key determinant of social progress and sustainable development.The governor made this known at a side event of the 70th Conference on the Status of Women held recently in New York City.
Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Caroline Darfur, Governor Mutfwang emphasised that empowerment begins with education and announced plans to support communities to encourage learning.
He also highlighted the risks posed to women and girls by artisanal mining activities in Plateau communities.Speakers at the event, themed, ‘Transforming Systems, Centering Women: A Social Justice Agenda for Equality and Accountability’, stressed the need for more women in positions of authority to shape policies.
They also advocated comprehensive reforms across multiple sectors.Andrew Mamedu, Country Representative of ActionAid Nigeria, noted that power and resources go hand in hand.
Joyce Ezeilo of Women Aid Collective emphasised the importance of transforming systems and strengthening women through a social justice agenda.
Amina Omeri, who presented a research report, recommended that governments treat school retention as both a social justice and economic strategy.
She also called for the formalisation of informal economies and the inclusion of women in decision-making processes through mandated representation.
“Governments should treat school retention as both a social justice and economic strategy requiring result-driven household support systems and enforceable preventive policies to be in place while formalising informal economics for safety and dignity,” Dr. Omeri said.
The event was attended by partners, including ActionAid International, Global Affairs Canada and over 45 delegates from various countries.
The event was hosted by the 100 Women Lobby Group.Its President, Felicia Onigbon, in her opening remarks, commended Governor Mutfwang for his support and urged other governors in Nigeria to emulate his initiatives.
