Efforts to build a climate-resilient Plateau State received a boost Thursday with the unveiling of the Plateau State Climate Change Policy and Action Plan (2026–2030).

The event, held in Jos, was supported by the Centre for Gospel Health and Development (CeGHaD).

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling climate change and urged stakeholders to ensure full implementation of the policy.

He was represented by his Chief of Staff, Jeremiah Satmark. The governor warned that failure to address environmental challenges could expose society to “looming danger”.

Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development, Peter Gwom, described the policy as a timely response to growing environmental threats.

He noted that rising temperatures and shifting climate patterns had intensified global environmental challenges. He said Plateau State was already experiencing heat waves, drought, desertification, changing rainfall patterns and flooding.

According to him, the policy provided a framework for mitigation, adaptation and sustainable development, supported by legal and institutional structures.

He added that it was developed through an inclusive process involving all 17 local government areas and key stakeholders. The Executive Director of CeGHaD, Nansik Onu, urged citizens and institutions to support implementation.

She said the policy offered a clear roadmap for a more resilient future for the state. The Plateau State House of Assembly pledged legislative backing for the policy once formally presented.

Stakeholders, including Professor Raymond Daspan and climate expert, David Wuyep, stressed the need for sustained funding and active implementation.

They emphasised that strong collaboration between civil society, government and the private sector would be essential for success. The event marked what stakeholders described as a new phase of climate action in Plateau State.
