The Jos Joint Traditional Council has announced the postponement of the 2026 edition of the popular Nzem Berom Festival, earlier scheduled to hold on April 24, 2026, citing the prevailing security situation in Plateau State and other parts of the country.
In a statement signed by the Nzem Berom 2026 Main Planning Committee and made available to THE NIGERIA STANDARD on Tuesday, the organisers explained that the decision followed a careful review of recent unfortunate happenings that created a solemn atmosphere across the state and beyond.
The Council, under the leadership of the Gbong Gwom Jos, Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, disclosed that the situation called for reflection, empathy and collective responsibility, making it necessary to suspend all planned celebratory activities at this time.
The statement noted that the Nzem Berom Festival remained a proud symbol of the rich cultural heritage, traditions and unity of the Berom people.It described the festival as a cherished annual event that brought together communities in celebration of their identity and shared history.
However, the organisers stressed that at this moment, greater priority must be given to solidarity with affected communities and to honouring the memories of those who lost their lives.
The Jos Joint Traditional Council also commiserated with the government and people of Plateau State, as well as families across Nigeria who lost their loved ones in recent incidents.
It prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed, divine comfort for the bereaved and healing for all those affected.The Council called on all citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant and united.It urged the public to continue to uphold the values of peace, tolerance and mutual respect that bind communities together.
The statement also appealed to citizens to keep the land in prayers and support ongoing efforts by the state and federal governments aimed at restoring peace and harmony.
The organisers expressed appreciation to invited guests, partners, admirers and sponsors for their understanding despite the inconveniences caused by the postponement.They added that a new date for the festival would be communicated in due course.
