The Taraba State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 40-year-old man in Kurmi Local Government Area for unlawful possession of a locally fabricated pistol.
The suspect, Jonathan Wunuji, a resident of Zambana village allegedly notorious for terrorising his community, was paraded at the NSCDC headquarters in Jalingo.
The State Commandant, Anthony Bitrus, represented by the command’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Corps (CSC) Iliya Samaila, said the arrest followed credible intelligence which led to a swift operation on 2 May in Visaula town, Kurmi LGA.
Samaila disclosed that the suspect was found with an unlicensed locally made pistol and two live cartridges.
He added that during the arrest, Wunuji allegedly attempted to open fire on operatives but was quickly disarmed and subdued.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may not have acted alone, as he is believed to be working with accomplices to intimidate and harass residents.
Samaila also alleged that Wunuji had been operating an illegal checkpoint where he extorted money from motorists and passersby, despite repeated warnings from community leaders and security agencies.
The NSCDC confirmed that the suspect has confessed to the crime and will be charged to court.
The command reiterated its commitment to tracking and prosecuting individuals involved in activities that threaten peace and security in Taraba State.
Samaila urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely intelligence, stressing that community cooperation remains vital in tackling crime and enhancing proactive policing.
