The Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi has announced plans to carry out a mass burial for unclaimed corpses currently kept in its mortuary.
In a public notice posted on the hospital’s official Facebook page on Thursday, the management called on members of the public, especially families of missing persons, to visit the facility for possible identification and claim of deceased relatives.
The notice stated that all identification and claim processes must be concluded on or before June 26, 2026, warning that any bodies remaining unclaimed after the deadline would be included in the planned mass burial.
According to the management, the exercise is in line with established hospital procedures and relevant regulations guiding the handling and disposal of unclaimed bodies.
It advised members of the public seeking further information to visit the Mortuary Unit of the hospital during official working hours for identification, enquiries and documentation.
The notice, signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Uche Azuka, on behalf of the management, appealed for urgency and urged residents to circulate the information widely to reach families of missing persons.
The management said the exercise is intended to help relatives recover and properly bury deceased persons, while also addressing the accumulation of unclaimed bodies at the facility.
