From JOHN FWAH, Kaduna

The Director-General of the Arewa Cohesion for Peace, Unity and Development Initiative, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, has called on politicians to embrace responsible conduct and shun violence as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

In a Democracy Day message issued on June 12, Idris congratulated Nigerians on the nation’s democratic journey and urged political actors to demonstrate patriotism and commitment to national development.

“There is need for politicians to conduct themselves responsibly and demonstrate genuine patriotism and commitment to national development as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum,” he said.

He cautioned against what he described as do-or-die politics, urging politicians to reject the use of thugs and all forms of electoral violence capable of undermining the democratic process.

“Political actors should avoid do-or-die politics, refrain from the use of thugs, and shun all forms of electoral violence capable of undermining the country’s democratic process,” he stated.

Idris also urged Nigerians to prioritise competence, integrity and proven leadership qualities when electing public office holders.

“I am also appealing to citizens to remain patriotic and prioritize competence, integrity, and proven leadership qualities when casting their votes,” he said.

According to him, the country’s future depends largely on the choices made by voters.

“I therefore urge Nigerians to elect credible candidates with the vision, capacity, and commitment to address the nation’s challenges and deliver good governance,” he added.

The Arewa group further stressed the importance of credible leadership in strengthening democracy and promoting national development.

“Nigerians should be reminded that electing credible leaders remains one of the most effective ways to strengthen democracy, promote national unity, and ensure sustainable development,” Idris said.

He also called on women to reject vote-selling and support candidates capable of advancing peace and development.

“I wish further call on women to reject all forms of vote-selling and to exercise their civic responsibility by voting for credible and capable candidates who will promote peace, development, and the welfare of the citizens,” he said.

On security, Idris urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

“I hereby also urge the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address the growing insecurity challenges threatening peace, unity, and development across the country,” he said.

He noted that addressing insecurity remains critical to preserving democratic gains and creating an enabling environment for economic growth and social progress.

Idris reaffirmed the commitment of the Arewa Cohesion for Peace, Unity and Development Initiative to promoting peace, unity, democratic values and responsible citizenship across the country.
