From DORCAS PANKYES, Abuja

The Defence Headquarters has mourned the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died in captivity following his abduction, describing his passing as a painful loss to the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military extended condolences to the Abubakar family, his colleagues, and Nigerians, while paying tribute to his service and professional legacy.

The statement said Abubakar was a distinguished officer who served the nation with dedication in several capacities, including as spokesperson for military formations and as Director of Defence Information.

It noted his contributions to counter-insurgency operations and institutional development within the Armed Forces.

“His commitment to duty and to the unity of Nigeria remains a shining example for all personnel of the AFN,” the statement said.

The Defence Headquarters explained that it had withheld public communication during his abduction to avoid undermining ongoing rescue operations, adding that all available operational resources were deployed by the Armed Forces and other security agencies in efforts to secure his release.

It said the news of his death represents a deeply painful moment for the military institution.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria further stated that it would intensify ongoing operations against terrorist groups across the country, adding that efforts would be sustained to dismantle networks and bring perpetrators to justice.

“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorist activities across the nation are held to account,” the statement added.
