The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of the Commanding Officer of 20 Model Battalion, Serti, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye, who died after an undisclosed illness.

A statement signed by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, said the officer passed away on Saturday.

The Commander, 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, in the statement, described the late officer as a dedicated and professional soldier, and conveyed condolences to his family, colleagues and personnel of 20 Model Battalion.

“Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye served the Nigerian Army and the nation with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and courage,” the statement said.

It added that he made “significant contributions to the operational effectiveness of 20 Model Battalion and the attainment of the Brigade’s security objectives,” noting that his leadership remained a reference point within the formation.

The Army said his death represents a major loss to the unit and the service.

Meanwhile, Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has commiserated with the Nigerian Army and the family of the deceased officer.

In a condolence message conveyed through the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Gebon T. Kataps, the governor described the news of the officer’s death as “a great shock and sadness” to the government and people of the state.

He said the late officer demonstrated exemplary leadership during his service in Serti, with commitment to peace, security and stability in Taraba and surrounding areas.

The governor added that the state mourns alongside the Nigerian Army and the family of the deceased, noting that he lived a life of honour, sacrifice and service to the nation.
