
Daichi Kamada scored a late equaliser as Japan fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their opening World Cup Group game in Dallas.
The Crystal Palace midfielder headed home in the 88th minute, diverting Koki Ogawa’s effort to rescue a point for Japan after a lively second-half contest.
The Netherlands had twice led in a match that developed slowly before opening up after the break.
Ronald Koeman’s side started the brighter, with Donyell Malen forcing three saves from Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in a subdued first half.
They went ahead seven minutes after the restart when Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk powered in a header from Ryan Gravenberch’s cross.
Japan responded quickly, levelling through Keito Nakamura, whose low strike beat Bart Verbruggen after 57 minutes.
The Dutch restored their advantage on 64 minutes when Crysencio Summerville cut inside and finished low beyond Suzuki.
Japan pressed for a second equaliser and were rewarded late on when Kamada’s header ensured both sides left with a point.
