The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, has assured the public that normal activities are continuing at the Institute following a security incident reported in its vicinity in the early hours of Tuesday.
In a statement issued Tuesday morning and signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Department, Dr Osime Samuel, the institution said the situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
NIPSS stated that there was currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities within the Institute.
The Institute added that all scheduled activities were proceeding without disruption.
According to the statement, security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Although the nature of the disturbance was not disclosed, the Institute noted that, as investigations were ongoing, it would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope or outcome of the event.
“The Institute is therefore unable to confirm details currently circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms,” the statement said.
NIPSS stated that it was working closely with the appropriate authorities and would provide verified information as soon as it became available.
The Institute urged members of the public and the media to rely only on official communications from NIPSS and relevant security agencies for accurate information.
Management of the Institute reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of its community.
It also commended the professionalism of the security personnel and agencies involved in responding to the incident.
It was gathered that armed men allegedly broke into the premises of the Institute and some lives were lost during the incident.
The Institute insisted that further updates would be communicated in due course.
Meanwhile, the Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the security breach at the institution.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, explained in a statement that the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 16, and involved security personnel on duty at the Institute.
“Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident.
“Security reinforcements have been deployed and patrols have been intensified around the general area by the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah.
“The situation is under control and normal activities have resumed. Investigation is ongoing,” the statement said.
