Sweden opened their World Cup campaign with a dominant 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Monterrey, producing a commanding attacking display from start to finish.
An early defensive error allowed Sweden to take control inside seven minutes, with Yasin Ayari firing into the top corner to give them the lead. The 22-year-old Brighton midfielder became Sweden’s youngest World Cup scorer since Tomas Brolin in 1990 and declined to celebrate against the country of his father’s birth.
Sweden doubled their advantage after half an hour following a flowing move down the left, with Alexander Isak finishing a sweeping attack involving Viktor Gyökeres to extend the lead.
Tunisia briefly responded before the break when Omar Rekik headed in from Hannibal Mejbri’s free-kick, halving the deficit and restoring some pressure on the Swedish defence.
Any hopes of a comeback faded after the interval as Sweden reasserted control, with sustained pressure leading to further chances for Gyökeres and Isak in advanced areas.
Substitutions further tilted the contest, with Mattias Svanberg scoring just 12 seconds after coming on to set a new World Cup record for the fastest goal by a substitute.
Ayari added his second late on from distance to complete the scoring and underline Sweden’s dominance, sending Graham Potter’s side top of Group F.
