Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Zah community in Yadul District of Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, killing four persons and abducting a woman.
Although details of the incident emerged on Wednesday, the attack occurred on Monday at about 6:00 p.m.
Zah community is considered vulnerable because of its proximity to the Sambisa Forest in neighbouring Borno State, a known hideout of Boko Haram insurgents.
It was gathered that the attackers, who rode into the community on motorcycles, set some houses ablaze and opened fire indiscriminately, killing four persons, including a forest guard providing security in the area.
Chairman of Hong Local Government Council, Aliyu Hong, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with THE NIGERIA STANDARD, saying the situation had been brought under control following the deployment of additional security personnel.
He said the local government leadership and heads of security agencies had visited the community to sympathise with the bereaved families.
Hong added that relief materials and other support had been provided to the surviving victims, while additional security measures had been put in place to prevent further attacks.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies for prompt action.
“Residents should remain vigilant, cooperate closely with security agencies and promptly report any suspicious activity in their surroundings,” he said.
The council chairman also commended the security personnel for their bravery, noting that their swift intervention prevented greater casualties.
“We deeply appreciate the courage and dedication of our security forces. Had it not been for their prompt response, the casualties would have been far higher. Our administration will continue to provide them with all necessary support,” he said.
