The Plateau State House of Assembly has withdrawn the controversial Bill seeking to provide allowances as pension for former members, principal officers and presiding officers of the House following widespread public opposition and extensive consultations with key stakeholders.
The decision was announced during a press briefing at the Assembly Complex in Jos on Wednesday.
The Majority Leader and Chairman of the Joint Committee on Rules and Business, Finance and House Services, Joseph Gokum, said the withdrawal of the Bill was informed by public feedback and the legislature’s commitment to responsive and people-oriented legislation.
Gokum explained that the decision followed careful consideration of concerns expressed by civil society organisations, labour unions and other citizens of Plateau State who protested against the proposed legislation and made submissions to the House.
He stressed that the 10th Plateau State House of Assembly remained committed to the principles of transparency, accountability and people-centred governance, noting that lawmakers have a responsibility to enact laws that reflect the aspirations and welfare of the people.
According to him, the Assembly acknowledged and respected the views of stakeholders, describing their contributions as a reflection of the realities and expectations of Plateau citizens.
“As representatives of the people, it is our duty to ensure that every law we make promotes equity, fairness and the overall welfare of all Plateau citizens, particularly workers and pensioners who have devoted years of service to the state,” he said.
Gokum stated that after due deliberation, the Joint Committee unanimously resolved to withdraw the Bill, describing the decision as a demonstration of maturity, humility and respect for public opinion rather than a sign of weakness.
He expressed appreciation to civil society organisations, labour unions and the people of Plateau State for engaging constructively with the Assembly throughout the process.
“Your vigilance strengthens our democracy and encourages us to remain accountable to the people we serve,” he added.
The Majority Leader reaffirmed that the Plateau State House of Assembly, under the leadership of the Speaker, Naanlong Gapyil, would continue to enact laws that promote good governance, unity and sustainable development across the state.
The statement announcing the withdrawal of the Bill was jointly signed by Gokum; Ibrahim Galadima, Chairman of the House Services and Welfare Committee; and Eli Bako, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance.
