Artificial eyelashes have become one of the most visible symbols of modern beauty culture among women across the world. From fashion runways in the United States to weddings in Nigeria, they have moved beyond mere cosmetics to become a statement of style, confidence and social identity.
Yet, while many celebrate their beauty-enhancing effects, others question their health implications, moral meaning and social influence. The debate over artificial eyelashes, therefore, presents both attractive benefits and noticeable shortcomings.
The popularity of artificial eyelashes can be traced to the beauty and entertainment industries in the United States during the early twentieth century. Hollywood actresses and beauty pageant contestants often wore long and dramatic lashes to improve their appearance under bright camera lights.
Over time, the trend spread through fashion magazines, films, music videos and social media. Today, eyelash extensions and attachments are common among celebrities, models, brides and young women across many countries.
One reason artificial eyelashes have gained widespread acceptance is their ability to enhance facial beauty.
At weddings, parties and social events, many women use them to achieve a more elegant and glamorous appearance. Long lashes can make the eyes appear larger, brighter and more attractive.
Miss Favour, a shop owner who sells bridal accessories, believes artificial eyelashes have become an essential part of bridal makeup.
“For brides especially, artificial eyelashes are often considered part of complete bridal makeup,” she says.
“They help women feel more confident and photogenic during important occasions such as weddings, send-off parties and pre-wedding ceremonies.”
Beyond physical appearance, eyelashes also contribute to self-esteem and social belonging among peers. In many urban settings, beauty trends influence social interaction, especially among young people.
Wearing fashionable eyelashes may give some women a sense of confidence, class or acceptance within their social circles. Among friends and colleagues, beauty practices sometimes create a spirit of unity and shared identity.
For some women, wearing eyelashes is simply a form of self-expression and modern fashion.
The attraction of beauty, confidence
Despite these advantages, artificial eyelashes are not without problems. Medical experts warn that excessive use or poor-quality eyelash attachments may damage natural eyelashes. Frequent application of strong glue and heavy extensions can weaken the original lashes, leading to thinning, breakage, irritation or infection around the eyes.
In some cases, users experience allergic reactions, redness, itching or discomfort. Improper attachment procedures may even affect eye health if hygiene standards are ignored.
Keziah Caleb, a mother, says she does not condemn the use of false eyelashes or eyelash extensions but chooses not to use them herself.
“They can cause eye irritation, and that is not good for someone of my age,” she says.
“I have friends who used them and complained of redness, itching and swelling. Besides, some of these products are expensive, and I do not think using them is necessary.”
Patience joesph, a beautician, believes artificial eyelashes have become part of modern fashion but urges users to avoid excessive use.
“The use of eyelashes has come to stay,” she states.
“However, if you apply them too often, they can damage your natural eyelashes and make them look scanty. My advice is not to use them regularly.”
Apart from health concerns, artificial eyelashes also attract moral and religious criticism. Some people believe that excessively altering one’s natural appearance amounts to dissatisfaction with God’s creation.
To such critics, artificial beauty practices encourage vanity and reduce appreciation for natural beauty. Religious conservatives often argue that true beauty should come from good character rather than cosmetic enhancement.
Health, morality, public perception
Jak Chrisanthus, who views the practice as a matter of personal choice, says many people began using artificial eyelashes because they admired how they looked on models and friends, although some parents remain strongly opposed to the trend on religious grounds.
Another controversial issue is the social perception attached to exaggerated eyelashes. In certain communities, heavy makeup and extremely long eyelashes are associated with indecent lifestyles or particular social groups, including prostitution.
Some people even associate excessive use with fetish practices or occultic beliefs, while others argue that overly dramatic eyelashes make people appear artificial or cartoon-like rather than natural.
Although such stereotypes may not always be fair, they continue to shape public opinion. Some employers, schools and religious institutions discourage excessive cosmetic appearance because they believe it projects the wrong image or distracts from professionalism and modesty.
Nevertheless, completely condemning artificial eyelashes may not be the best solution. Satmak Istifanus, a parent, believes moderation is the key.
“The use of artificial eyelashes is not anything condemnable,” he says.
“Like many fashion trends, moderation and proper regulation are important. I would not mind if my wife or daughter wears artificial eyelashes, but I would not like the extreme use of them. Since women use many artificial beauty products, this should not be seen as an exception.”
He also emphasises that beauty practitioners should be properly trained to maintain hygiene and use safe products.
Lovina Abraham, a young graduate who enjoys wearing artificial eyelashes, also supports responsible use.
“I see nothing wrong with using eyelash extensions,” she says.
“I wear them for special occasions and feel very comfortable. Consumers should avoid excessive use or low-quality attachments that may harm their eyes. As with every product, there are fake ones in the market, so users must be careful when patronising beauty vendors.”
Choosing beauty with responsibility
As safe and normal as the use of these cosmetics may appear, parents, schools and religious leaders can educate young people on balancing personal appearance with self-respect and inner values.
Public awareness campaigns can further help users understand both the benefits and the possible risks associated with artificial eyelashes.
Artificial eyelashes represent both beauty and controversy in modern society. They can improve appearance, boost confidence and encourage self-expression, especially during weddings and other celebrations.
At the same time, they may damage natural lashes, raise moral concerns and attract negative social judgments when used excessively.
Society, therefore, needs a balanced approach that respects personal freedom and fashion choices while encouraging moderation, health consciousness and appreciation for natural beauty.
