The Middle Belt Coalition Movement (MBCM) has called for greater regional representation in Nigeria’s political affairs, saying increased participation would contribute to the development of the region.
National Chairman of the coalition, Kube Dwana, made the call during the inauguration of the Kogi State branch of the group in Lokoja on Sunday.
Dwana, who was represented by the National Director of Publicity, Adams Momoh, said the coalition wanted greater attention to issues affecting the Middle Belt.
“Enough is enough of the marginalisation of the Middle Belt,” he said.
He cited federal appointments, infrastructure, security and the distribution of resources among areas where the coalition wanted greater representation for the region.
“Our region has for too long borne the weight of marginalisation, in federal appointments, in infrastructure, in security, and in the equitable distribution of the nation’s resources,” he said.
Dwana said the coalition was not affiliated with any religion, ethnic group or political party, but was established to promote the interests of the Middle Belt.
He urged state and federal governments to engage with the coalition on what he described as the legitimate aspirations of people in the region for development, security and fairness.
The inauguration of the 29-member Kogi State executive, led by Aliyu Ibrahim, was part of the coalition’s efforts to establish structures across states in the region, he said.
Dwana charged the new executive to remain inclusive and non-partisan while engaging political parties and governments.
Responding, Ibrahim pledged that the Kogi executive would work to address challenges facing the region.
“We are going to work tirelessly and selflessly as a team to change the narrative of our plight in the region for good,” he said.
He also appealed to youth to participate in efforts to address insecurity and poverty in the region.
