The 11th Jos National Trade Fair, which opened on Saturday, October 17, 2026, represents more than a gathering of traders and business owners.

It offers an opportunity to project Plateau State as a resilient, commercially friendly and promising destination for business and investment.

Despite the security challenges the state has experienced in recent years, the fair sends a strong message that Plateau remains hopeful about its economic future and determined to move forward.

Scheduled to run until the end of October, the fair brings together traders, entrepreneurs and business owners to display their products, meet potential customers and explore new commercial opportunities.

A visit to the fairground Monday revealed traders setting up their stands ahead of the official opening ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, October 21. Their presence offered an early glimpse of the commercial activities expected during the event.

Although the ceremony was yet to take place, preparations were already under way, reflecting the willingness of business owners to participate in activities that could expand their markets and strengthen their enterprises.

For Plateau, this participation is significant. It suggests that, despite past difficulties, confidence in Jos as a place to trade, establish business relationships and pursue economic opportunities remains alive.

The fair also presents an opportunity to change negative perceptions about the state. Security concerns have affected public confidence in some areas, but sustained efforts to promote peace and stability provide grounds for cautious optimism.

Recent government efforts to improve security and restore public confidence are important to this process. However, lasting peace requires continuous action, cooperation among communities and effective protection of lives and property.

Platform for business, culture, tourism

Beyond its symbolic value, the trade fair offers practical benefits, particularly for small-scale businesses. Entrepreneurs can display their products, reach new customers, receive feedback and introduce goods that might otherwise struggle to find a wider market.

For businesses operating with limited resources, such opportunities can make a significant difference. A successful fair could help them increase sales, attract distributors and establish relationships that endure beyond the event.

The event can also encourage local production by giving manufacturers, farmers, artisans and other entrepreneurs a platform to promote goods made in Plateau State. Supporting these businesses can create jobs and ensure that more economic activity remains within the state.

Plateau’s rich cultural heritage is another asset the fair can showcase. Through local crafts, traditional products, food and creative works, exhibitors can introduce visitors to the state’s cultural identity while creating opportunities for cultural exchange.

Tourism also stands to benefit. Plateau is known for its distinctive landscapes, pleasant climate and cultural attractions. A well-organised trade fair can encourage visitors to explore these attractions, patronise local businesses and contribute to the hospitality sector.

Hotels, restaurants, transport operators and other service providers could benefit from increased visitor traffic. These connections demonstrate how commercial events can support several sectors of the economy beyond the immediate activities taking place at the fairground.

However, the benefits will depend on more than the number of exhibitors or visitors. Organisers and government authorities must ensure that the event is properly managed, accessible and safe for participants.

Sustaining the momentum beyond the fair

Sustaining the fair annually is equally important. Consistency can build public confidence, encourage traders to return and help businesses plan their participation as part of a longer-term commercial strategy.

The government should therefore work with organisers, business associations and private investors to improve facilities, promote the event widely and address challenges that could discourage participation.

Improved roads, reliable electricity, better communication networks and a business-friendly environment would further strengthen the fair’s impact. Security must also remain a priority before, during and after the event.

The fair should not be treated as an isolated celebration. Instead, its outcomes should inform broader efforts to support small businesses, attract investment, promote tourism and expand economic opportunities across Plateau State.

One trade fair cannot resolve all the state’s economic and security challenges. Nevertheless, it provides a practical platform for rebuilding confidence, encouraging enterprise and demonstrating that commercial activities can continue alongside efforts to achieve lasting peace.

For Plateau, the real measure of success will not be the number of stands or visitors recorded during the fair, but the business opportunities created, partnerships sustained and investments attracted long after the event ends.

Sustaining the Jos National Trade Fair, which is anchored by the Plateau State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, currently headed by Commissioner Musa Ashoms, is, therefore, an investment in small businesses, tourism, culture and public confidence. With consistent support, the event can become an even stronger symbol of resilience and hope as Plateau State works towards a peaceful and prosperous future.

Certainly, the fair is timely. Thus, patronage from all and sundry will make it more vibrant, successful and rewarding for exhibitors and visitors alike.
