The elimination of Enugu Rangers and El-Kanemi Warriors from continental competition over the weekend has raised questions about the ability of Nigerian clubs to compete against Africa’s top sides.

Rangers lost 3–2 on aggregate to Algeria’s MC Alger, while El-Kanemi Warriors fell 4–2 on aggregate to Morocco’s Raja Casablanca.

The exits have renewed concerns about the financial and structural challenges facing Nigerian clubs, despite the country’s reputation for producing talented footballers.

Competing in the CAF Champions League requires substantial resources for international travel, accommodation, training camps, medical services and player bonuses. Clubs operating on limited budgets may struggle to meet these demands against better-resourced opponents.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), government authorities and corporate sponsors have been urged to consider a dedicated support programme for Nigerian clubs participating in continental competitions.

Such a programme could assist with travel expenses, accommodation, training facilities, medical care and technical preparation. Any financial assistance, however, should be subject to clear eligibility criteria and independent oversight to ensure accountability.

Stronger corporate partnerships could also help reduce the financial burden on clubs and provide businesses with greater visibility through African competitions.

Beyond funding, Nigerian clubs need better financial planning, regular payment of salaries, improved recruitment and experienced technical personnel to compete consistently at continental level.

The domestic league also needs stronger commercial partnerships, improved infrastructure and greater investment in player development. Clubs that maintain professional standards throughout the season are better positioned to handle the demands of continental football.

Effective scouting, tactical analysis, sports science and injury-prevention programmes could further improve the preparation of Nigerian representatives. Better travel coordination and adequate rest would also help players manage the demands of international fixtures.
