From SAMUEL MATHIAS, Minna
The Niger State Government has dismissed reports linking a fatal road accident along the Minna–Bida Road on Monday, October 26, to the convoy of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, attributing the incident to alleged reckless driving.
The accident reportedly claimed the lives of students of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, and a Government House staff member, while other staffers involved in the incident are receiving medical treatment.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 28, the Commissioner for Information, Obed Nuhu, acknowledged the pain and grief of the bereaved families and clarified the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The statement read: “In the interest of accurate public information, the government wishes to clarify reports on different news outlets linking the incident to the convoy of the Governor of Niger State, Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
“Contrary to these reports, the driver involved in the incident is a Government House staff member who was returning from a trip with other staff members who are currently receiving treatment. The vehicle was not on a convoy assignment with the Governor.
“Preliminary information available to the government indicates that the driver acted recklessly, resulting in this unfortunate incident. The government strongly regrets the circumstances that led to the loss of lives and reiterates that road safety must never be taken for granted.”
The government cautioned media organisations and members of the public against spreading unverified information, particularly reports linking incidents to the governor and the state government.
It reiterated its commitment to the welfare and safety of residents, urging motorists to observe traffic regulations, exercise caution and demonstrate responsibility on the roads to prevent avoidable tragedies.
The government also extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of its sincere sympathy during the difficult period.
“May Almighty God grant the souls of the departed eternal rest and comfort their families,” the statement added.
